When the HOA letter shows up
Homeowners' associations have strict exterior standards, and violations can result in unwanted fines or warnings. The letter usually cites something you've stopped seeing: green streaks on the siding, an oil-stained driveway, a walkway gone black.
The trouble is that these surfaces collect grime slowly. By the time someone writes it up, it has been building for years, and a quick rinse with a garden hose won't touch it.
